James married Leatha Anne Watson, daughter of David Watson and Elizabeth Abigail Bishop, on 1868. Leatha was born 15 Mar 1849 in Lewis Fork, Wilkes County, North Carolina. She died 18 Dec 1918 in Waynesboro, Kentucky and was buried in Liberty Methodist Church Cemetery, Matney, North Carolina.
