Lineage Societies
This page is my arbitrary selection of lineage societies, that is, societies where membership eligibility depends on your ancestry. (One exception is the Grand Army of the Republic, which was an organization for actual Union Veterans. The G.A.R. was closed in 1949, but remains a subject of interest, and is included here.) I am not a member of any of these organizations. Most of these societies undertake worthwhile endeavors that benefit genealogists and the community at large. With some, however, it may be best to keep in mind the line from Steel Magnolias: "An ounce of pretension is worth a pound of manure."
